
Greetings, friends! We’ve got something wonderfully nasty for you today. Pacific Northwest death metal/deathgrind purveyors Ripping Remains released the Necrodestiny EP back on October 3rd through Satanik Royalty Records, and now we’re here to talk about it. Emerging from what was Dripping Decay, vocalist Eric Stucke and drummer Jason “The Machine” Borton teamed up with bassist Michael “Frei” Freiburger to release five ferocious cuts that serve as only the beginning for this project. Eric took the time to respond to our questions and share a little more about the idea behind Ripping Remains. So give it a read, hit play, and familiarize. How and when did you first get into playing music, or metal more specifically, and how did your band get its start? Any pushback from family/those close to you?
I started with the radio and got into some basics like Rage Against The Machine, Nirvana, Deftones when I was around 11 to 14. Then I found music downloading and burning CD’s and dove right down the rabbit hole. By 16/17 I was listening to bands like Death, Repulsion, Acid Bath, Bethlehem, Swans, My Dying Bride, Emperor, Burzum, Nile. I started buying cheap records and getting into 70’s bands like King Crimson and Tangerine Dream. Those were some of my favorites back then.
How would you describe your band and what you play to someone who is completely in the dark?
Old school death grind with buzzsaw guitars and a lot of UK and Scandinavian influences. Take the Earache Grindcrusher comp and hit shuffle, you’d come up with Ripping Remains.
Is there anything about your latest album or about your band that no one will find in any interview or review that you care to divulge?
I wrote, played and did vocals on the album but live I’ll just be a frontman. Our bass player Frei runs Satanik Royalty Records who is releasing this EP, and put out our last band Dripping Decay’s last 2 releases. He played in a band called Death Cave; both of our bands broke up around the same time so it was a natural fit!
Any funny stories from playing shows / tours / festivals, etc?
We’re just debuting our first demo and haven’t played any shows yet.
What do you see as some of the great things happening in and around the metal scene (yours or just in general) and what are some of the worst things happening right now?
The Northwest scene is always going off. Disembowed God Fest, Northwest Massacre and A Day Of Death
are all great yearly feats. Headsplit, Hierophant, Satanik Royalty and Death Metal Mama are all bringing killer bands to the area.
Most folks have passions for a cause or causes that are close to them. What, if any, are some of the most important issues (social/political/humorous/etc.) for you / your band and how do you insert those issues into your music?
I generally don’t try to make us too political because I know that our audience is diverse. That being said,
“The Horror Writes Itself” is about the fact that there are atrocities going on every minute in this world that are as dark and depraved as anything we can imagine in fiction. It describes innocent civilians in a
war zone who’s only crime is being in that place and time and experiencing the worst that humanity has to offer. It’s inspired by Gaza, Ukraine, Yemen, Sudan, so you can imagine where my heart may be in those areas, yet it doesn’t explicitly focus on one. I think we’re in an incredibly dark time socially and politically and our music may reflect that at times, but it’s generally going to be in a subversive way where many
people can relate and not justify one specific person or people.
Do you guys have day jobs or hobbies you want to share?
I have a boring job and I escape from it with music and RPG games. I like diving down rabbit holes about Epstein and government conspiracies. Frei runs a jewelry and piercing shop called Bury Me In Gold and his label Satanik Royalty, and Jason likes bowling, cigars and filling a huge room with thousands of CD’s like a massive vault.
What advice do you have for music critics and outlets out there? How can we all better serve the genre in the eyes of a hard-working musician?
Be accurate with details. If you write a review or do an interview, double check the facts: spellings, year and label of release, etc.
Any specific long term goal(s) in mind?
My goals are clear. I want to start by getting where we were with our last band Dripping Decay. Short term is an album and small West Coast tour, but long term my goal is the same for every band, which is to get to a place where we’re offered amazing shows all over the world. I want to play Maryland Deathfest, Obscene Extreme, Killtown Deathfest, Asakusa Deathfest, and I want to play Europe and Asia and South America, and in the process play with as many of our inspirations as possible. I’ve been working at that goal for 20 years.
When you’re not obsessing over your own material, what are some of your favorite albums to listen to currently?
The new albums from Caustic Wound, Corpus Offal, Abraded, Blizaro, Stress Angel, Sijin, Empty Chalice… all killer!
What is the near future outlook for you or your band? Any specific events on the horizon that the masses should be aware of?
For the near future, we’re just gearing up to play shows in 2026, teaching my guitar parts to a guitar player who will play my material live and be our guitarist going forward, so I can focus on vocals. We’ll be writing as much new music as possible for a potential full length, and lining up small tours next year. Northwest Massacre Vol 2 in Longview WA is gonna have Massacre and Opprobrium as headliners, it’s going down last weekend of March 2026 and we’ll be on it.
