We have a few more Profiles to get through before the end of the year, which means a few more 2025 releases you need to be paying attention to as you put your lists together. So let’s keep it rolling with Sacramento funeral doom duo Oromet. They released their second album, The Sinking Isle, back in November through Hypaethral Records and Transylvanian Recordings. These three tracks cover 42 minutes and what’s held within them is truly epic. The soundscapes Oromet have created are both monolithic and melodic. It’s truly immersive stuff start to finish. There’s plenty to unpack in The Sinking Isle, if that wasn’t clear, but the Q&A below is fairly succinct however. Give it a read, hit play, and be prepared to get lost in this thing.

How and when did you first get into playing music, or metal more specifically, and how did your band get its start?

Both of us have been playing in aggressive / heavy bands of various subgenres since the early 2000’s. Oromet began in 2022. Patrick and I were at his studio and he was describing a musical atmosphere that he was interested in exploring. It felt like he had been reading my mind. I had some sketches of a song that I had been working on, so we began collaborating, sending things back and forth to each other until eventually we had an entire album.

How would you describe your band and what you play to someone who is completely in the dark?

We are a doom band… but our focus is on melodic guitars and lush atmospheres as opposed to sludgy riffs. Rather than wallowing in bleak dirges (which I do love to listen to) we try to make songs that feel epic and transcendent. At times the music flows like a winding stream, and at others it towers overhead like a frigid peak, piercing the clouds.

What do you see as some of the great things happening in and around the metal scene (yours or just in general) and what are some of the worst things happening right now?

I love seeing the amount of collaboration and support between the artists in our local scene. It really seems like an interconnected web of creative energy. I don’t think that is necessarily unique to our area, I see examples of this all over the place and it’s really inspiring to see different communities of musicians working together. The worst things happening right now are AI and the influence that social media algorithms have had on the way that music is created and promoted.

Most folks have passions for a cause or causes that are close to them. What, if any, are some of the most important issues (social/political/humorous/etc.) for you / your band and how do you insert those issues into your music?

Musically I get the most inspiration from being in places of powerful natural beauty. Living in northern California affords me many opportunities. I feel like our culture is distancing itself further and further from the natural world, and focusing instead on consumption, and viewing the world as a “resource” that exists for our benefit. That is tragic.

Do you have day jobs or hobbies you want to share?

Patrick runs a recording studio in Sacramento, CA called Earthtone Recording Company. All of our music is recorded there. Dan is a graphic designer.

What advice do you have for music critics and outlets out there? How can we all better serve the genre in the eyes of a hard-working musician?

I appreciate music writing that seems to come from a genuine place. If it feels real then I’m interested.

What is the near future outlook for you or your band? Any specific events on the horizon that the masses should be aware of?

We are doing a short Pacific Northwest tour from Nov 6 – Nov 9. You can find more details on our instagram page @oromet_doom. (Ed. note: I know these dates have come and gone, but I couldn’t imagine a better area or time of year to experience this music live.)

Summarize your band in one word.

Oromet.

Many thanks to Oromet for the time!
