Morning, all! Welcome to a new week and another edition of Monday Merriment. For this week’s installment, let’s look back at video footage of a guest performance Mastodon guitarist/manimal extraordinaire Brent Hinds did with the Austin School of Rock some years back. Check it out after the jump:

So this video’s several years old but still gives me plenty of lulz. Where do you really start with this thing? The fact that Brent’s wearing a shirt that says “Horseshit” on it? The fact that he’s obviously shithoused? And of course, we can’t leave out his vocal performance, which…is kind of what it sounds like when you play records backwards to look for Satanic messages. It’s such that after a certain point, he just stops even trying to sing…which we’re all probably better off for.
Of course, his guitar playing holds up well enough (that is, until about 2:30 in), and the kids backing him clearly know their stuff, too. So much so that after about 3:05, he lets them take over and takes what looks like a 15-second cat nap.
I’ll stop here because I don’t want to keep ragging on Brent; the dude’s a fantastic guitar player and composer, and very clearly a…let’s say, “multi-talented” guy. But clearly, this clinic wasn’t one of his finer moments. C’est la vie. Either way, that’ll do it for this week’s Merriment; check back later for more!
