It was quite the first half of 2024 for Nest. Led by Scour and Agoraphobic Nosebleed bassist John Jarvis, the trio released the new full-length Endeavors back in April (embedded below, so go hit that now before scrolling on). But that was just the beginning. Around that release was just an onslaught of live performances – including dates in support of Pantera in February, touring the new album in April, a stop at Maryland Deathfest… The list goes on and there’s plenty more on the horizon. You get the idea. What I’m basically getting at is John’s a really freaking busy dude, and we’re stoked he took a few minutes to answer our Profile questions to introduce Nest a bit more. Give that a read while their multi-dimensional take on metal fills the space around you. There are far worse ways you could spend your time.

How and when did you first get into playing music, or metal more specifically, and how did your band get its start? Any pushback from family/those close to you?
I had MTV at a young age and that influenced a lot, along with family members great taste in music. I started bands in grade school and luckily always had supportive friends and family.
How would you describe your band and what you play to someone who is completely in the dark?
I’d say we are a metal band that mixes together many sub genres.
Is there one (or more) thing about your latest / upcoming album or about your band that no one will find in any interview or review that you care to divulge?
One unknown thing about the new album is that I recorded it all in my room, no studio at all!!!
Any funny stories from playing shows / tours / festivals, etc?
There are funny stories every night on tour. Last night [Ed. note: a stop on their “Endeavors” tour back in April] a bobcat ran by our out-door merch table in Texas. Maybe it was a mountain lion, but that don’t happen every day.
What do you see as some of the great things happening in and around the metal scene (yours or just in general) and what are some of the worst things happening right now?
There are good and bad in just about everything, in the metal scene I’m noticing a new young crew of kids coming up that have been listening to bands like Cannibal Corpse their whole life, and creating cool new music.
Most folks have passions for a cause or causes that are close to them. What, if any, are some of the most important issues (social/political/humorous/etc.) for you / your band and how do you insert those issues into your music?
I don’t deal with many social and political ideas lyrically, you can decide all of that for yourself. My lyrics are usually about personal experiences.
Do you guys have day jobs or hobbies you want to share?
Right now, I work for a record label when not playing music. I’m very lucky for that.
What advice do you have for music critics and outlets out there? How can we all better serve the genre in the eyes of a hard-working musician?
No advice from me but to stay honest.
Any specific long term goal(s) in mind?
A tour with Metallica or Deftones would be pretty incredible!
When you’re not obsessing over your own material, what are some of your favorite albums to listen to currently?
A newer band from Texas called Bleed I really started to like recently. The new album from the band Houston. The new Allen Epley solo album is great too
What is the near future outlook for you or your band? Any specific events on the horizon that the masses should be aware of?
Getting back into the studio after the “Endeavors” tour and more shows and tours upcoming!!!
Summarize your band in one word.
Metal.
