Is this Thursday going a bit too quietly for you? It sure is for me. Well, let’s change that for the both of us, shall we? We’ve got a new video from Chicago-based doom crew, ÇÖKÜŞ, that should do just that. The band’s debut full-length, An Hour of Lies, won’t be out until later this summer, but we’re pumped to premiere the video for its second single, “Midnight Sun,” here with you today. If you’re feeling in the mood for some old-school, Sabbath or Obsessed flavored heavy doom, click the link below and check it out!

Having previously plied their trades in bands like Earthen Grave, Witchcryer, and Lair of the Minotaur, the guys in Çöküş — a word translated from Turkish as “decline” or “collapse” — spent more than a decade writing and recording the material for An Hour of Lies. And as you can see, they really know their way around a doom tune. On both “Midnight Sun” and its predecessor single, “Wolf Moon,” guitarists Jason Muxlow and Steve Ligeza trade meaty, catchy riffs that would fit right into the Trouble or Pentagram libraries, while vocalist Mark Weiner pierces through the fray with his melodic, Wino-esque howl.

These pieces all come together pretty well, in the end. “Midnight Sun” has a great melodic cadence throughout, and Weiner’s effortless shifts from barked verses to crooned choruses help turn the song into a total earworm. We’ll definitely be keeping an eye on Çöküş leading up to An Hour of Lies‘ official release this September.
An Hour of Lies will be out September 13, 2024 and can be preordered via Qumran Records or Çöküş’ own Bandcamp page. For more information on Çöküş, visit the band’s Facebook page.
