cursed imagery

Welcome back, friends! It’s the last Friday of October and that can mean only one thing: it’s time for another round of Retrocution! What kinds of things did all the album covers have in store for us during this particular spooky season? Well… unfortunately, quite a bit of Nazi stuff? (HEY BANDS! Maybe uh… don’t do the Nazi stuff? All it does is out you as small men holding forks in a world of soup.)

Thankfully, though, there were still plenty of good/bad, NON-[we-got-our-lunch-eaten-almost-80-years-ago-and-still-can’t-get-over-it]-oriented album covers out there this month. We’ve got ten of ’em for you today, so let’s not waste any more time. Time to jump in!

Slugweed — Forever Animated

This could honestly be an outtake graphic from one of the old Steve Brule episodes. What were we even trying for, here, Slugweed?

Gruzja — Koniec Wakacji

Another green-and-purple experiment, and… good lord, does this one hurt anyone else’s eyes as much as it hurts mine? Christ. The (admittedly pretty good, if a little weird conceptually) pencil work is completely wasted for the color clash in the background. Bleh!

Church of Cthulhu — Get Outta My Swamp!

Finally, a green and purple experiment that gets it right. And by “right,” I mean “holy fuckin shit, nothing has ever been righter in the world.” This is loud and stupid and I love it.

Tardigrade Inferno — Burn the Circus!

This looks like it should have the tagline “From the makers of Exploding Kittens…” In any case, I’m glad I now know what Pennywise would look like if he was a microscopic organism.

Sindicato de Macuarros — Macuarrock

This almost isn’t bad, but then you realize the picture shows, uh… a dragon-goat riding into battle on… a chicken?

Shade of Ice — Never Darling

This definitely looks like something you’d expect from a melodic death metal band. Definitely. No notes.

Torture Chain — The Reign of Deimos

Could someone please explain to Torture Chain the importance of font color choices? There may be a band name and album title on this cover, but I’ll be damned if I can actually see them.

Rot God — Sonic Degeneracy: A Senseless Selection from the Insane Complete Work

D’you guys think this, uh… pig-wolf-snake? …likes playing with weapons? I can’t tell.

Savage — Glory Riders

This could be a Manowar album cover, if all of these guys had… about half as many articles of clothing on.

Hyperfang — Levitate

Saving the best for last. Holy fuckin’ hell, this has it all. The grid and sunset lend some outrun vibes, but then there’s also a skeleton army and a damn viper crawling out of a skull? You spoil us, Hyperfang. You absolutely spoil us.

That’ll do it for this month’s edition! You know what to do: tune back in this time next month for the best/worst album covers from November. Until then…

Keep it heavy,
Dan

  1. […] Far Away from the Sun does). Don’t let the album art that could very well end up in one of Dan’s monthly posts fool you (depending on taste of course, I find it endearing), Crystal Coffin’s third […]
