Profile: Experimental death/grind faction Defigurement

Our first Profile of the week sure is an intense one. Defigurement, the limitless death/grind metal entity, released Endbryo last month through Nefarious Industries. And I don’t say ‘limitless’ casually. Their debut is wonderfully formless in its intensity. It’s experimental, it’s progressive, but it still holds all of the ruthlessness we would hope for from anything that falls into the ‘grind’ sphere. The bottom line is; this thing will pummel you, but you’ll be locked in from start to finish. To share a bit more about this project, Kevin Fetus (guitars) stepped in to answer our questions. Give them a read, hit play, and I’ll catch you next time.

How and when did you first get into playing music, or metal more specifically, and how did your band get its start? Any pushback from family/those close to you?

I was about 10 years old, watching the video for Ozzy’s “Bark At The Moon”, and watching Jake E. Lee thread on the guitar got me thinking about playing guitar. So, I got a job scorekeeping Little League Games for $4.00 a pop…. took me months to save up enough money to buy a shitty Arbor (Rhodes Style) Flying V…  It then took me the next 37 years to figure out to play the guitar well enough to help write the Defigurement album. To this day, my mother can’t stand the music I play…. I’m pretty much going to die knowing she hates my art.

How would you describe your band and what you play to someone who is completely in the dark?

I have heard our music described as avant garde, death grind, and tech grind, but I don’t think we fall into any of these sub genres of grind/death metal… We wrote our music the same way as everyone else, copious amounts of hash, sarcasm, inner hatred, and bleeding fingertip. We have the obvious death metal/grindcore influences, as well as some noodle passages but it’s not “tech”… I also think we sound on the happier side of metal in comparison to say, Primitive Man, or Alterage, who are create disgusting atmosphere that I love to wallow in….. I have no idea how to describe our music… Sorry.

Is there anything about your latest album or about your band that no one will find in any interview or review that you care to divulge?

This project originally started during COVID with just Damian (bass) and I. Damian had written drums tracks that he would send me at 9:00 in the mourning, and then I would imbibe in the green smoke and pull riffs out of the haze, and 2-3 hours later we would have a song… this went on for about 2 weeks until we had 13 songs. Somewhere within all that vapor, Matt and Mike were adding into the fold and we re-recorded everything… But I think I was sober for that second session.

Any funny stories from playing shows / tours / festivals, etc?

I ran into Brian from Cephalic Carnage who did some guest solos on the song “Godtopsy”. My other band (Lack Of Interest) was playing Obscene Extreme 2025 as was Cephalic, so I was able to talk to and thank Brian for his amazing contribution to our son(s)….Running into a guy on the other side of the world- a guy you’ve never met, who played on your record is pretty cool.

What do you see as some of the great things happening in and around the metal scene (yours or just in general) and what are some of the worst things happening right now?

I love how black metal and death metal, the sub genres of metal keep expanding and bringing in influences that are pushing the music/culture into new territories… The worst thing going on… probably the whole right wing/fascist music…. I don’t care about your politics; It’s about the music and the brotherhood that goes along with the chosen art we have all gravitated towards. Keep your racist beliefs
to yourself.

Most folks have passions for a cause or causes that are close to them. What, if any, are some of the most important issues (social/political/humorous/etc.) for you / your band and how do you insert those issues into your music?

Look…Message?….. ugh….

Do you have day jobs or hobbies you want to share?

I’m a Graphic Designer, I have worked for Century Media Records, Earache, Prosthetic, Deepsix, and a slew of other labels and bands. I need more bands/labels to hit me up to design their LP/CD/Cassettes, merch, etc…. www.fetusk.com is my website…I also do some studio/session work for a few bands that I am contracted to talk about.

What advice do you have for music critics and outlets out there? How can we all better serve the genre in the eyes of a hard-working musician?

Just pay attention to our music/art….

Any specific long-term goal(s) in mind?

Murder Suicide Pact!

When you’re not obsessing over your own material, what are some of your favorite albums to listen to
currently?

Kriegsmaschine, N.W.A. Hauntalogist, Wu Tang Clan, HTRK, Medico Peste, John Coltrane, Decipher, Melt Banana, Khanate, SWANS.

What is the near future outlook for you or your band? Any specific events on the horizon that the masses should be aware of?

Possible live shows, and hopefully another record.

Summarize your band in one word.

Lawless.

Many thanks to Kevin and Defigurement for the time!
