Receiving the Evcharist: Veiled and 805 Blonde Ale

Receiving the Evcharist

Receiving the Evcharist is our weekly feature where we pair choice albums with our favorite libations.  Drink from the cup of heresy.  This week’s offering: Veiled’s Black Celestial Orbs and Firestone Walker Brewing Company’s 805 Blonde Ale.

The Metal: Veiled’s Black Celestial Orbs
veiled black celestial orbs

A title like Black Celestial Orbs tells you pretty much what you need to know up front about Veiled’s debut full-length album.  The Pittsburgh outfit plays black metal that captures both the snarl and menace of second wave pioneers that will be familiar to any lifer of the genre with the skyward melodies that characterize a more modern style.  Like their Omniscient Veil demo (which I would also give a high recommendation to), Black Celestial Orbs has a way of lulling the listener into a trance, the hypnotic rhythm of the drums and ethereal sounding guitars whisking away the outside world.  The swirling tide of the music occasionally recedes into lush clean passages, giving the listener the space necessary to draw a breath before things kick off again.  Black Celestial Orbs is a perfect “dark room and headphones album” but any way you can listen to this thing is worth the time spent.

The Booze: Firestone Walker Brewing Company’s 805 Blonde Ale

805

As the first telltale beads of sweat fall into my eyes, I feel the return of spring finally making its way to California.  After weeks of rain and clouds, the sun is finally returning in full force, and that means the short lifespan of our winter beers has also come to an end.  Fortunately, there’s still plenty of good stuff on the lighter end of the spectrum to slake any thirst, and for this time of year, one of my new go-to’s has been Firestone Walker’s 805.  A perfect crowd-pleaser, this blonde ale is clean and well rounded in flavor, with sweet malts playing off of subtle hops to create a nice balance.  Its ready availability doesn’t hurt either; I’ve sipped this at more shows now than I can count, and it’s ideal for having something with you the whole night that’s not going to leave you too incoherent.

Unit next time, cheers and be good to each other.
