The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 410 (10.18.2025)

playlist - mixtape

The 410th edition of the Nine Circles Playlist remembers as a kid using two boomboxes to tape Terry Brennan’s copy of Destroyer, and being amazing watching KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park. Ace Frehley was always the best band member, and his solo output often was better than anything Paul, Gene, and the rest were doing (his version of “Hide Your Heart” slays the KISS version, fight me). Also, dude could cover a classic song like no one’s business, as you’ll hear below.

RIP, Spaceman/Space Ace, may you write that next installment of “Fractured” in the stars…

The rest of the 9C gang varies the list, some getting into the wicked spirits with tracks from King Diamond and Mercyful Fate, dark and midnight black with Fordæðuskapr and Hexecutor, and even a little Death Cab For Cutie. You can find a lot more as well from the likes of Arcadea, Coroner, Giöbia, and a monster of a new track from sunn O))) rising from the earth now they’re signed to Sub Pop.

Get listening. Stay safe. See you next week.

The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 360 (11.02.2024)

playlist - mixtape

Time is a circle. That’s the only thing I can come up for the 360th edition of the Nine Circles Playlist, which comes right after the nightmares horror fun of Halloween and right before the nightmare horror fuel that is the the 2024 presidential election. So we start with the spooky fun of Neon Nightmare and they blast of Type O Negative worship and the campy fun of the latest Cradle Of Filth (after loving the last three records I’m still unsure of the new one based on this single) before traversing into darker territory thanks to 1349 and Five The Hierophant.

The contributions from the rest of the 9C crew are a little light this week, but you’re getting a mix of things from the likes of Wardruna, Harsh Realm (featuring Midwife), a banging classic from Dillinger Escape Plan and a reminder that Godspeed You! Black Emperor have yet to put out a less than great album. There’s more; I’m sure you’ll find them.

Get listening. Stay safe. VOTE IF YOU’RE IN THE US. See you next week.

The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 336 (5.18.2024)

playlist - mixtape

Last week we mourned the death of Steve Albini; this week we feel weird as we celebrate the release of the new Shellac record. The world’s a crazy place, kids…best not to make too much of it. In the meantime I’ve been drowning myself in 70s German prog but somehow, someway little bits of metal find there way to my stereo. Like the new Bossk, or the knock down head smashing hardcore of Knocked Loose. It’s all food for the neurons, you know?

The 9C crew their own baggage to the 336th edition of the Nine Circles Playlist, including new music from My Diligence, Ulcerate, Oh Hiroshima, and Void Blight. Not to mention new music from Liminal Shroud, which I’ve been waiting for since whenever I got hooked on their last album. There are more surprises within, including the by-now requisite pocket of sad non-metal if you need a breather from your workout, I guess. I don’t know, I think the last time I formally worked out was in the 90s.

Get listening. Stay safe. See you next week.
