The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 363 (11.23.2024)

playlist - mixtape

I’m back, freezing my ass off and drinking way more coffee than is probably safe for humans, but does any of that matter when the new Opeth is here for the metal community to unite in their divisive hot takes? Anyway, it’s not all death vocals and Ian Anderson narration…I’m also back deep into the new Smashing Pumpkins which is WAY better than it has any right to be. So that’s how we’re kicking off the 363rd edition of the Nine Circles Playlist just in time for the holidays.

The rest of the 9C gang have OPINIONS on what should be lighting your fire this week, so I’ll let them take it away with music from – among others – new music from Bedsore, Grima, Groza, Saor, and Killswitch Engage, not to mention the wonderful noise cloud of Trauma Ray. Oh, wait…Two Minutes To late Night is back too?!

Get listening. Stay safe. See you next week.

The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 353 (9.14.2024)

playlist - mixtape

You guys hear this new Blitzkrieg? Damn. Brian Ross sounded great on the new Satan but he’s positively possessed on this new album. Beyond that I’m kinda surprised how much I’m digging the new Oceans of Slumber and – of course – the new collaboration between Mastodon and Lamb of God, not to mention the (I can’t believe I’m saying this) killer new Smashing Pumpkins album?! Verily, the 353rd edition of the Nine Circles Playlist is working out just for me, thank you.

Fret not, the rest of the 9C crew are bringing the thunder with tracks from Iotunn, Defeated Sanity, Marrow of Man, Vorga, more Midwife, some old Obscura and new music from .clipping. There’s a lot more, but I’m most excited for the last one, because FKA twigs is finally releasing a new album after almost six years and the first tracks is VERY much both in her style and in my wheelhouse…

Get listening. Stay safe. See you next week.

Quickies: HELP SCOTT KELLY OUT. Also, tour news. That’s literally it.

Corey’s in Boston for the day, so I’ll be taking the Quickies this time around. Here’s what we missed in the metal world today:

  • We’re a bit late in getting this on the blog, but Neurosis frontman Scott Kelly‘s wife, Sarah, has fallen ill with a mysterious, as-yet-undiagnosed condition, and a GoFundMe page has been started to help with their medical bills. If you’re able to donate, please do.
  • So I’m gonna go out on a limb and assume that neither Axl nor Rob have actually heard the new Marilyn Manson album, because the only comments they can muster about dude’s upcoming summer tour with Smashing Pumpkins are “LOL 90s, AMIRITE GUYS?”
  • In other tour news, Swedish hardcore punk crew Refused announced one today, too!
  • Also in tours and Swedish: power proggers Evergrey are coming back Stateside toward the end of the summer as well.
  • And finally, if you’ve had a hard day and want to feel better about yourself, listen to Mötley Crüe frontman Vince Neil butchering the national anthem at a Las Vegas Outlaws game:

I have no idea what the hell the Las Vegas Outlaws are, but if they’re going to treat us to garbage like this, that’s probably for the best. Anyway, that’ll do it for tonight. Check back tomorrow for more!

Keep it heavy,

-Dan
