The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 319 (1.20.2024)

playlist - mixtape

There’s no other way to say it: We’ve got Whores. No, really! One of the best best bands to ever do the noise rock thing are finally back with a new full length in April, and we get a taste now with “Quitter’s Fight Song” to whet the appetite. The fun videos don’t end there, because we’ve also got some serious visual flair courtesy of Ryujin and their debut all over the place metal record. It also wouldn’t be me if I didn’t include the newest single from the forthcoming Judas Priest album. This is the first one that didn’t bowl me over, but given time Halford and co. are sure to take my heart again.

Strap yourself in for the 319th edition of the Nine Circles Playlist.

The 9C staff continues to have your back with new tracks from Sgàile, Vemod, Deicide, and Infant Island; classic hits from Manowar, Blind Guardian, and Mortiis of all people; a double dose of old and new Heavy Temple, and more surprises…maybe even a country tune.

Get listening. Stay safe. See you next week.

Album Review: Vemod — “The Deepening”

Some albums are never late, nor are they early, but arrive precisely when they are meant to. Norway’s Vemod are kicking off 2024 in ethereal style with their first album in 12 years, The Deepening — a beautiful, genre-transcending exercise in atmosphere that sees the band continuing to weave threads first sewn on their debut in ways both familiar and unexpected, with a grander sound and beefed-up songwriting chops to match. The wait may have been long, but the result is oh so worth it.

Initial Descent: January 14 – 20, 2024

For anyone keeping tabs, I ran nearly my upcoming half marathon distance over the weekend so…score. No doubt I’ve got the distance and the endurance for it so I’m stoked even if the two of you could care less, haha. Right. Anyway, our lead off album this week from Ribspreader kept me excellent company on said run since I needed some straight up death metal to help me grind it out, Resin Tomb was there as well with their grinding take on death metal, and Vemod‘s black metal helped me brave the icy temps because…well, black metal obviously. That trio and a few more are in store for you below. Still not a huge list but we’ll be back to full bloat before you know it. See you here throughout the week.

The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 313 (12.9.2023)

playlist - mixtape

It’s a quick one for the 313th edition of the Nine Circles Playlist. I have a house full of guests and a 10-year old sleeping in my office, and she is NOT pleasant if you wake her up. So I’m kicking this brief playlist off with a few old favorites I’ve been playing recently like Accept and Candiria, and one new one – the progressive metal of The Anchoret, which I’ll be talking about come end of year.

It’s a light turnout for the rest of the 9C crew, but we’ve still got you covered with Dissimulator, Bipolar Architecture, Vemod, Vitriol and Petrification, plus older cuts from Arcturus, Deafheaven, another track from the Full of Hell and Nothing collaboration, and much more.

Get listening. Stay safe. See you next week.

CANTO: Vemod, Lucifer, Massacre, and More

So I just got back from Utah. Weird place! But Zion and Bryce Canyon are dope.

  • Leading off, after a full week break, I give you the latest new track from While She Sleeps, titled “Down”. That one features Alex Taylor of Malevolence, and the video for it can be seen here. Self Hell is set for a March 29 release through Spinefarm.
  • There are a few of us at 9C excited about the new Vemod material, so I’m going to jump there next. Give the lyric video for “Inn i lysande natt” a watch here. That’s taken from the forthcoming new album, The Deepening, which is out on January 19 through Prophecy.
  • American death metal veterans Massacre have signed on with Agonia Records for the release of their fifth studio album. That production is currently underway, so we’ll keep an eye out for more details in the near future.
  • Out of Odium Records, Belgian black metal collective Serpent’s Oath are releasing their third album, Revelation, in January. For a preview, check out the video for “Pandaemonium” from a few days ago.
  • And we’ll wrap up with the new track and video from Lucifer. Give the clip for “Slow Dance In A Crypt” a watch below. Lucifer V will be out on January 26 through Nuclear Blast.

“Ein Bier… bitte.”
