Nine Circles ov… A 1995 Black Metal Retrospective (Pt. 1)

Continuing to punish myself with extra writing during Album of the Year season, welcome back to my annual retrospective on black metal albums celebrating their 30th anniversary this year! While not quite as jam-packed as 1994, there were still plenty of all-time greats released in ’95, and this time I will be opting to cover most of the big ones you can probably think of off the top of your head (Darkthrone didn’t make the cut once again, sorry Chris!). Black metal was no stranger to experimentation early on, but this year saw the furthering of unique sounds that carry clear throughlines to some of the most highly-regarded bands of today.

Last year I decided to split this into three parts, and will be doing that once again for the sake of article length. For a genre that already has too many characters dedicated to it by the standards of certain heavy music fans, who really wants to read a single 3,500 word monstrosity about it? Once again Norwegian bands take center stage at five out of nine entries (and the entirety of this first part alone) but a few other European countries will also be featured, including one for the very first time. And in another first for this series I was able to nail down at least the month that each album was released in 1995, rather than having to guess based on any recording info I could scrounge up… so I can affirmatively say it will be a chronological journey this time around! Let’s take a look at the black legends 1995 had to offer.

The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 336 (5.18.2024)

playlist - mixtape

Last week we mourned the death of Steve Albini; this week we feel weird as we celebrate the release of the new Shellac record. The world’s a crazy place, kids…best not to make too much of it. In the meantime I’ve been drowning myself in 70s German prog but somehow, someway little bits of metal find there way to my stereo. Like the new Bossk, or the knock down head smashing hardcore of Knocked Loose. It’s all food for the neurons, you know?

The 9C crew their own baggage to the 336th edition of the Nine Circles Playlist, including new music from My Diligence, Ulcerate, Oh Hiroshima, and Void Blight. Not to mention new music from Liminal Shroud, which I’ve been waiting for since whenever I got hooked on their last album. There are more surprises within, including the by-now requisite pocket of sad non-metal if you need a breather from your workout, I guess. I don’t know, I think the last time I formally worked out was in the 90s.

Get listening. Stay safe. See you next week.

The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 317 (1.6.2024)

It’s 2024, ya gnarly droogs. I hope you all made it over to the other side. I just discovered through the grapevine a band called Hands of Goro that has an amazeballs cover, so we’re kicking off with their new single as well as something called Cancer Christ, which…well, it’s intense in a stupid fun way, so why not?

The 9C staff went all out to kick off the year with some killer music. We’ve got Vorga, Fathomless Ritual, some classic Immortal, something called Pinkshinyultrablast, the wonderfully named Warcrab, Old Gods of Asgard, some live Lovebites, new Vipassi and Blood Command…and it wouldn’t be a playlist without at least one Martinek squeezing in some Mountain Goats. Plus plenty of other surprises!

Get listening. Stay safe. See you next year.

The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 273 (3.4.2023)

We’re creeping ever so close to the release of 72 Seasons, so why not launch this, the 273rd edition of the Nine Circles Playlist, with the latest from Metallica. “If Darkness Had a Son” continues the streak of heavy, catchy as hell songs, and I for one can’t wait for the full album. I’ve been thinking a lot a lately about what we like, and how our tastes are informed by so many things, and I’m slowly getting to the point (or age, most likely) where I don’t give a flying f-ck about what’s cool or hip in a “scene” predicated on gatekeeping in both directions – it’s a drag and bores me to tears. How about this? I’ll like the underground indie band pumping out new and interesting tunes just as much as I dig the major label big boys still keeping things interesting decades later. Deal?

What’s the rest of the staff listening to? Lots of new music from the likes of Aara, Legion of the Damned, Out of the Mouths of Graves, Enslaved, Dawn Ray’d, Henget, Isolant, and Liturgy, not to mention a lot more both new and old, metal, and well…not so metal.

Get listening. Stay safe. See you next week…
