Necrolytic Goat Converter

Turkey day came and went and how much did you gain? Was it worth it? For me, yes. Granted it wasn’t the same as years past but it was still epic in the sense of amazing home cooked goodness. Hopefully you all experienced similarly. And for those of you reading this that don’t celebrate, I hope you had a good Thursday anyway. Alright then, new metal time and this week we’ve got a new one from Necrolytic Goat Converter and while this is black metal it is an extremely personal outing from our very own Chris Voss which we are extremely proud of so please, get on this asap. Next up we’ve got an ass kicking EP from Soilwork, an incredible split between psych grungers Ghost:Hello and noise metal’s new saviors Night Goat, and a filthy death metal entry from Undergang that’s sure to please the old guard purists. Do all of those and all of the rest in this lengthy list. Enjoy.

Initial Descent: December 3 – 9, 2017

Cleric

I was just talking about how we had crossed into December and BAM! it’s cold and snowing a little. For those of you up north, feel free to make fun of me for my thin blood and thin skin. Me and cold don’t get along very well anymore but as the weather cools down the metal heats up so let’s get to this edition of Initial Descent. Leading us off is Retrocausal which breaks a seven year silence from Cleric and they waste no time showcasing their ability to effortlessly bend sound at will as well as stretch their jagged experimental legs with longer tracks. Next up is the mysterious DSKNT with their debut album PhSPHR which can best be described as bleak and chaotic black metal. Moving along is a three way split, Shades of Sorrow, between Suicide Wraith, Necrolytic Goat Converter and Uncanny Reality — expect a wonderful black metal ear bashing here. Last up in the opening slots is The Line Between from Blood Oath which saw cassette release earlier this year but is being reissued on CD this week so there’s no reason not to get your hands on this amazing blast of raw and pure death metal. That’s a killer opening four but as usual we have way more to discover so slap a hoodie on and cinch up the headphone cords, it’s time. Continue reading

Album Review: Suicide Wraith, Necrolytic Goat Converter, Uncanny Reality – “Shades of Sorrow”

I love split releases.  Whether its similar bands playing off of each others’ strengths or two totally different bands going toe-to-toe, there is a sense of community and camaraderie that makes split releases a joy to listen to.  Plus it just feels like you’re getting more bang for your buck, right?  Today, I have the pleasure of talking about Shades of Sorrow, a split that certainly delivers on the “bang,” a three-way offering of depressive black metal from the UK’s Blackened Death Records featuring Suicide Wraith, Uncanny Reality, and our very own Necrolytic Goat Converter.   Continue reading

Not sure about you but all this solar eclipse talk is getting old. For the past two to three weeks it’s been all the rage. So, solar eclipse Monday, check it or not. I’ve heard not to look at it unless you want your eyes to pull a Scanners and explode. Ah yes, plenty of new metal to be heard and we have a full plate for you here on Initial Descent. Leading us off this week is our very own Chris Voss and his multi-faceted black metal project Necrolytic Goat Converter with the insanely good and extremely robust Isolated Evolution. Be sure to head inside, listen and SUPPORT! Next up is another wicked good black metal album, Heretical Wisdom, from Void Ritual — Dan Jackson has done a hell of a job on this album so be sure to check it out, you’ll be glad you did. Next up is the debut, Sinister Totem, from Finland’s Shaman Ritual and their combination of tribalistic death metal and jarring black metal will be a long standing favorite here. Closing out the opening spots is Khazzadum with their Tolkien inspired death metal on Plagues Upon Ardawhether you’re into Tolkien or not this is a great album. We’re only four albums in and the end of year contenders are strong but, as always, we have so much more waiting for you inside so go and explore… Continue reading

Album Review: Necrolytic Goat Converter – “Isolated Evolution”

Isolated Evolution Cover

After a demo recording and a split with fellow metal dad Domestikwom, New York’s Necrolytic Goat Converter are set to unveil their first full length album, Isolated Evolution.  In the interest of transparency, it should be noted that the man behind Necrolytic Goat Converter, one Chris Voss, is a friend and fellow writer here at Nine Circles.  Let me tell you, though, if I found this album lying on the sidewalk, picked it up, and listened to it without knowing who made it or what I was in store for, I would still have found an album that truly captivates and resonates with me.
