The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 340 (6.15.2024)

playlist - mixtape

Nothing could stop the 340th edition of the Nine Circles Playlist from making its way into reality, not even my valiant, nigh Herculean efforts to procrastinate do anything other than assemble the playlist for you, the discerning 9C reader. Honestly, much as I would like to talk about how good the new Orden Ogan is, or that the forthcoming Piah Mater will satisfy that nasty “vintage Opeth” sound you’ve been shaking in the streets for, the truth is I haven’t been listening to metal at all. Really, not even the new Black Sites, which despite not having listened to AT ALL is one of my favorite sounds I’ve had beamed into my canals this year.

Nope, haven’t been listening to metal at all…

Good thing the 9C staff have been listening to stuff like Health and Glassing and Uprising and Hail Spirit Noir and Midwife and more awesome bands…some I can’t even pronounce or spell without assistance and so am to be shamed…

There’s also some Cure.

Get listening. Stay safe. See you next week.

Let’s face it: Steve Albini was one of the real ones. Beyond the incredible music of Big Black, or Shellac, or so many of his other projects were the incredible records he recorded, produced, or engineered. Never mind all the hype of Nevermind…for me the real Nirvana, the uncaged animal that was that band can be found in the raw power that was Albini’s masterclass that is In Utero. Rest in Peace to one of the mammoths of heavy music; the 335th edition of the Nine Circles Playlist is dedicated to you.

After that there’s new and old delights from the rest of the 9C staff, including Ceremony of Silence, new Sonja, Health, Thot, new Thou, even some hip-hop courtesy the latest Drake/Kendrick beef and some JPEGMAFIA, and because I can’t get enough of his production some Pixies to close us out. Plus more surprises.

Get listening. Stay safe. See you next week.

The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 325 (3.2.2024)

playlist - mixtape

The 325th edition of the Nine Circles Playlist is reasonably sober and trying desperately not to screw up. But it’s so hard when the latest from Pissed Jeans is blasting through your headphones like a Neanderthal with a pickaxe. Not to mention since it’s a new year OF COURSE Haunt have a new album out and it’s just as great as every other release. Oh, did I mention the new Bruce Dickinson album is finally out in the wild? It is, and you can hear his solo version of “If Eternity Should Fail” right here.

We’ve got a lot more than that on deck, though. A quick perusal of the staff’s listening habits have exposed among other things cuts from Dool, Olamut, Hideous Divinity, Cult Burial, Civerous, Heavy Temple, more video game music I am completely lost by (thanks, Dan); more alternate versions of Enslaved tunes (thanks, Colin), and finally because I do love it, I’m allowing the latest single from Alcest to close things out even though we opened with it last week (thanks, Vince).

Get listening. Stay safe. See you next week.
