The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 405 (09.13.2025)

playlist - mixtape

The 405th edition of the Nine Circles Playlist admits it: most of the week was spent reveling in the recent discovery of the genius of the Grateful Dead’s 5/8/77 Cornell show. But that still left a little time for the likes of new singles from Testament and Blut Aus Nord, not to mention the stellar progressive metal releases from Between the Buried and Me and Cea Serin.

The 9C crew come down hard with the likes of new music from Tribal Flesh, Execution Complex, Smohalla, and Isen, as well as deeper cuts from Cremation Lily, Graveripper, and Ethel Cain. 18 pounding tracks in total, all guaranteed to put you in your place for the weekend.

January ends strong, music-wise. As for everything else, well…all I can say is thank god for music. When I’m not buried deep in 70s prog (currently immersing myself in Van Der Graaf Generator) it’s been a diet of killer metal from Century, currently my AOTM if we’re keep ing tracks anymore. Plus really strong showings from Onirophagus bringing the death-doom hard, and new Mean Mistreater, whose new album comes out later this month.

Elsewhere the rest of the staff has you covered with all sorts of music, including new tracks from Deafheaven, Cult of Fire, Skaldr, Bonesawer, Lucifer’s Child, Flesh Prison, and a bunch more weirdness to match whatever your psyche’s been putting out. You want some of that Ethel Cain shit everyone’s going ga-ga for? We got it. You want some Sabbath stomp? We got it courtesy of Early Moods and I didn’t even choose it for the playlist (thanks, Josh!).

The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 360 (11.02.2024)

playlist - mixtape

Time is a circle. That’s the only thing I can come up for the 360th edition of the Nine Circles Playlist, which comes right after the nightmares horror fun of Halloween and right before the nightmare horror fuel that is the the 2024 presidential election. So we start with the spooky fun of Neon Nightmare and they blast of Type O Negative worship and the campy fun of the latest Cradle Of Filth (after loving the last three records I’m still unsure of the new one based on this single) before traversing into darker territory thanks to 1349 and Five The Hierophant.

The contributions from the rest of the 9C crew are a little light this week, but you’re getting a mix of things from the likes of Wardruna, Harsh Realm (featuring Midwife), a banging classic from Dillinger Escape Plan and a reminder that Godspeed You! Black Emperor have yet to put out a less than great album. There’s more; I’m sure you’ll find them.

Get listening. Stay safe. VOTE IF YOU’RE IN THE US. See you next week.

The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 338 (6.01.2024)

I’m hidden away in the bowels of nowhere, hiding out as I approach the completion of 51 GODDAMN YEARS ON THIS MUDBOWL CALLED EARTH. It’s enough to make you, well…crawl in a hole somewhere. At least the music’s good, what with stuff like new Flotsam and Jetsam, Cavalera Conspiracy continuing their re-recording of classic Sepultura, as well as Rotting Christ and Rivers of Nihil doing their thing.

That’s not all though for the 338th edition of the Nine Circles Playlist. The staff has tracks from the likes of Black Hole Deity, Okular, Nile, Bound in Fear, Have a Nice Life, Ruins of Perception, Gatecreeper, and Panopticon, among others. And since we’re a little light and honestly I’m craving the old school when things like riffs and solos were in vogue, I tossed some more goodies on at the tail end. Even some Blaze era Iron Maiden. Don’t @ me; some of it rocked hard.

The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 232 (5.21.2022)

Welcome back to your regularly scheduled Nine Circles Playlist. The 232nd, in fact. And the metal has been flowing here at 9C. Some really strong music coming out lately, both from heavy hitters like Cave In and Blut Aus Nord as well as some smaller but really killer bands like Predatory Light and Kvaen, who I just got turned onto thanks to the awesome staff here at Nine Circles. So let’s kick it off with some of that and then get to the crew.

Have you been knocked to the floor yet? If so, pick yourself back up, because Anton’s back and he’s got new music coming from Warforged, Greylotus, and Inanna. Then Josh barrels into the room (careful not to spill a drop of his choice bourbon) with Tombs covering Motörhead, Abaddon Incarnate, Dismorphic Demiurge, Periphery, and some killer new cuts from Wormrot. Next up it’s Vincent over the moon with news that Imperial Triumphant is back with new music. He’s also bringing the variety with Cocteau Twins, new Nechochwen, A Pregnant Light and some Martyrdöd – I just picked this up on vinyl and it is indeed vicious. Buke alternates between old and new with some classic Rainbow, Amon Amarth, Sanctuary, and Opeth before following it up with some new music from Master Boot Record. Finally Angela makes sure we all go home satisfied with some Alexisonfire, Sowulo, and Ethel Cain.

Get listening. Stay safe. See you next week.
