The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 332 (4.20.2024)

playlist - mixtape

Morning. Depending on your particular predilections, Happy Record Store Day and/or Happy 4-20, man. I guess it could be both (let’s face it, it’s probably both). I’m sitting both out for now as I get ready for a family outing, but in the meantime there’s this new Alcest everyone is crowing about, not to mention the utter obscene amount of good music that just came out from the likes of Couch Slut, DVNE, and High on Fire, to mention a few of the bands I just received physical copies of (not through the site, but through plain old supporting the artist). Oh, and Julie Christmas is coming back with new madness, so prepare your souls!

Our crackerjack team of 9C writers have their own penchants and partialities to share, including sonic riches from Fractal Generator, Hippotraktor and Celeste; a pair of live in the studio cuts from Marriages and Now, Now; more killer cuts from recent releases by the likes of Hekseblad, Atræ Bilis, and Ingested and a lot more. All that and we’re closing out with the return of the mighty Whores. No doubt that one is going to make a few of our EOY lists (me and Josh, at least).

Get listening. Stay safe. See you next week.

The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 290 (7.1.2023)

Yesterday I looked at my phone and the news notifications piled up, one nightmare after another. As we head into an extended weekend for the holiday all I could think of was we are creeping closer and closer to true independence from compassion, from reason, from any kind of rational thought. I need music more than ever now – maybe you do, too. So here’s hoping the 290th edition of the Nine Circles Playlist gets you through your own crisis this week.

It kicks off a trio of things that have stuck with me, whether it’s the closing chapter of grindcore heavyweights Graf Orlock or the progressive instrumental intricacies of RLYR and Stinking Lizaveta. From there the staff contributes mightily with cuts from Atoll, Oxbow, Urne, Royal Thunder, NOFX, Peter Gabriel, Mercyful Fate, live Emperor, some Usnea, Lacuna Coil and a lot more.

Get listening. Stay safe. See you next week…

The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 280 (4.22.2023)

Happy Earth Day, everyone. Also Happy Birthday to our own Literati Overlord. My kicking off this, the 280th edition of the Nine Circles Playlist with Osi and the Jupiter is for him. Also I may be crazy, but the latest single from Extreme has me excited for what Nuno and the crew are going to bring us come June. Finally I’ll end my contribution with some righteous death thrash courtesy of Raider, who brings the might with the title track from their latest album.

The rest of the staff has no shortage of riff delights to offer this week: another single from the forthcoming Immortal, new music from the great return of Julie Christmas, followed by Teitan, The Anchoret, Gozu, Ascended Dead and Thulcandra. There’s also older cuts from Odium and Transcending Bizarre? as well off the beaten path tracks by the likes of Balance and Composure, Yves Tumor, and the new wave goth attack of Vandal Moon. There’s more (like new music from Tanith and Smoulder) but why spoil the surprise?

Get listening. Stay safe. See you next week…

Everyone, slow down a bit and enjoy the season and yourselves. I say this because in a matter of a couple days, rounding up some groceries and random crap we needed, I saw at least ten people nearly kill each other either over a parking space or a shopping buggy — it was like watching MMA but for free. Come on guys, dig deep and find that inner peace. Or not and continue on as you were. Either way, seems like the best thing to do in the midst of all this craziness is barricade ourselves in with some tunes we all jammed on last week. Subscribe to our YouTube channel then head inside and let the barricading begin. Continue reading
