The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 327 (3.16.2024)

playlist - mixtape

Is this the first we ever kick off The Nine Circles Playlist (the 327th, to be clear) with an ad? Sorry not sorry when the ad in question is for the new album from my beloved Darkthrone. I’ve already pre-ordered my exclusive “Nocturno Culto” edition of It Beckons Us All and cannot wait for April to get here. For me the heaviness continues with the new one from Necrophobic, pummeling death metal from Skeletal Remains and the new (to me) stoner prog metal of Mr. Bison.

Music abounds, is what I’m saying…

The staff follows suit with a bevy of righteous tunes both new and old (and emo of course, thanks Vince!). We’ve got new music from Dvne, Gatecreeper and Witch Vomit; classic Junius and Katatonia, some new (to me) indie shoegaze rock from Now Now; plus a lot more to move you as we get a finger’s length away from the Vernal Equinox from bands like Goat Major, Ulcerate, and much more.

Get listening. Stay safe. See you next week.

The words you’re reading now constitute the third time I tried to write up this week’s edition – the 320th to be exact – of the Nine Circles Playlist. The other two versions were angry too angry to let stand because in the end (and I know this is a gross simplification, so apologies) 99.9% of the words shouted out into the reaches of the Internet matter for a microsecond before being consumed by something else. So rather than get into I’ll just say that with all that freedom maybe think about what you want to say before sounding like an utter tool, okay? In the end most of our opinions are inflated, and there’s little reasons to throw more shade and negativity out there.

Sorry. This is a metal blog, so let’s turn it up and get back to our regularly scheduled programming.

We’ve got a lot on tap this week, including tracks from Slimelord, Haunted, more new Chapel of Disease, some new Skeletal Remains and Skraeckoedlan, classic cuts from Sentenced, Tiamat, and Borknagar, and more from the likes of Hulder, Hideous Divinity, Leander Kills, Job For a Cowboy and others…

Get listening. Stay safe. See you next week.

Black Sheep Wall
Black Sheep Wall

Last week was a good week. Finally. Lots of reasons and none of which matter to anyone but me. I mention it because it was an anomaly as of late and demanded mentioning. And, I’m all out of witty one liners—even though last week was full of crappy but funny movie quotes—so you got that for an opening statement. Yay you. Anyway, new week means new releases and we got a ton of them to get to and from all corners of the vast metal and metalish landscape. Looking for some incredible sludge that bites back? Black Sheep Wall has your back. How about some shamanic doom? Sunnata saves the day. Or maybe some filthy doom/sludge is calling? 16 and Grime do it and do it well on a split so you’re covered there. Or maybe some exceptionally low end driven, crazy, avant-metal fits the bill? You guessed it, Timo Ellis is looking out for you—just sayin’, I’ll die on the hill of Timo Ellis and Netherlands so there’s that to entice you. All that and a very long list to follow so GET AFTER IT, folks.
