The 390th edition of the Nine Circles Playlist finds itself groggy and tight this morning. Maybe he needs more water – he definitely needs more coffee. He also needs more music in the vein of the latest from Vader and The Haunted, which don’t expand their respective genres but rather execute them with such precision I think any liquid I do pour into my body will spill out, Loony Tunes-style. And the welcome return of the original lineup of Wormrot only adds to the carnage.

The 9C crew come bearing their own garlands of bloody May flowers this week, with the welcome return of Asunojokei and Psycroptic, some more grinding death with Celestial Sanctuary, groovy stoner with Miss Lava, vicious black metal from Onirik and a whole lot more, including a closer from Camel which I note because I swear it wasn’t me who added it, but I love it just the same.

Prog forever, my nerds.

We had an enormous gathering of my kid’s friends over the weekend for an ‘end of school year’ celebration and I have to say that they’ve restored my faith in the future. They were some of the nicest most well mannered and well meaning kids I’ve ever had the pleasure to be around. And folks, sometimes it’s the little things that stir something within that needs to be stirred and I needed that. Moving on to this week’s new releases: we’ve got some stellar picks starting with one of my personal faves The Haunted for an album I’ve been waiting forever on, next up we’ve got the punky, thrashy, most excellent Zig Zags, then Obsidian Tongue stir the black metal pot, and death metal vets Vader round out the top slots. But, we’ve got much more in the list that follows so get to it and we’ll see you here throughout the week. Oh and don’t forget: if you know a soldier or someone who served, hug them and thank them on this Memorial Day.

The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 386 (05.03.2025)

The 386th edition of the Nine Circles Playlist has been sick since Easter and frankly is sick of it. Thank god we have a new hilarious Mammoth video directed by Robert Rodriguez and featuring some killer gore effects, as well as a surprise new track from Primus that hearkens closer to their classic era than anything they’ve done in ages. I’ll spare you cuts from The Flower Kings and NewDad and leave you with some vicious black metal from Taär to up the extremity this week.

In that regard I have plenty of support, as the rest of the 9C staff bring the heavy in flexible and creative ways, including new tracks from The Haunted, Tonguecutter, and Propaghandi; continued love for the new Deafheaven, new music from Carl Skildum of Inexorum, now working under the Skjolden moniker, and a duo of “tree” bands as we get both The Man Eating Tree and The Old Dead Tree. I have no idea if one is the result of the other….

I have acquired something called a slackline board. It’s gonna make me balanced as shit. Yeehaw.

  • I like Berlin. So let’s start with progressive stoner metallers from said city, Sheev. The first track from their sophomore album, titled “”Martef”, can be heard here. Ate’s Alchemist will be out on July 11th through Ripple Music.
  • Hexella are releasing their debut album, The Ancient Gaping Mouth, on June 27th through Hells Headbangers. With today’s announcement, they also released the new track “Ophitic Revelation”.
  • The fifth studio album from Nailed To Obscurity is arriving on September 5th through Nuclear Blast, titled Generation Of The Void. Check out the video for the first single, “Overcast”, here.
  • Heaven Shall Burn just released the latest sample from Heimat, a track titled “Confounder”. As a reminder (is it a reminder? have we talked about this?) their new album is out on June 27th through Century Media.
  • And to end our Wednesday… another Century Media offering! We have the new video from The Haunted for “In Fire Reborn”. Give it a watch below. Songs of Last Resort is out on May 30th.
