This week is a bit of a break from the long new release lists we’ve had as of late. Think of it as a good time to catch up or a good time to let your wallets recover. Don’t get me wrong, just because this list is shorter than usual doesn’t mean the quality drops off so keep that in mind. Alright, lighting the way this week is Blight House with their gore drenched approach to death metal, Sleepwalker continues to be an off kilter black metal mainstay, and Crypta gets down and dirty with their signature heavy handed death metal. Plus, there’s a few more that follow but you already knew that. So, hop aboard this short list week and find you something shiny and new.

Best of 2018: Josh’s List

EOY 2018 Header 9C

I had a plan in January. The same plan I have every January: to only document the albums that strike a major chord in one way or another. Yet, here we sit in December and I’m debating on at least one or two of my locked list and mourning those who fell off. Don’t take ‘fell off’ as a knock either. It simply means there was no shortage of amazing albums this year and well, I just enjoy the torture of whittling away on my favorites (not).

I’ve spoken at length about how important music is for life in general and how important it is for me as someone that had a finger on the play button for nearly all 8,760 hours that made up this year. EOY lists, I love them – always have and always will. It’s a chance to purge all the best and move on to yet another cycle into the unknown. Fire walk with me through the albums that hit home the hardest… Continue reading

Circle Pit: Albums We Missed Q3, 2018

purgatory

From time to time we get together as a team and discuss some of our favorite albums we missed covering at release time and there’s been plenty of these discussions so far this year. Whether due to time slipping away from us or whatever the case may be, we miss them. Well, now that we’ve just passed the end of September, we are proud to bring you some overlooked highlights from the third quarter. So, without further delay, let’s jump right into it. Albums we missed in Q3, 2018. Here. We. Go. Continue reading

Initial Descent: July 29 – August 4, 2018

dan jackson - void ritual
Void Ritual – Dan Jackson

This week, we cross into August and amazingly this rock we call earth is still here. Ten thousand wonders. As we spiral further into the abyss, stock in the metal we love goes up, obviously, because what else can we fall back on that will always be there like a glowing beacon of eternal fire? With that said, it’s time to see what this week has in store. Carry on…

Void Ritual leads the charge and rightfully so, Death Is Peace is not only a tour-de-force of melodic second wave..ish black metal and arguably the band’s best work to date but the revenue from its sales will go to The Coalition to Stop Violence Against Native Women so GO BUY IT! Rhode Island’s gory death metal duo Blight House give us their debut Summer Camp Sex Party Massacre just in time for memories of an actual summer camp with a killer running around to still be relevant. And, Abhorrent Deformity offer up yet another gory platter of technically brutal death metal in the form of their second effort Slaughter Monolith.

An outstanding black metal album and two horrifically gory death metal albums up here for you to chew on. AND, there’s much more to digest below so hang around and start clicking. You’re welcome. Enjoy your Monday and we’ll be seeing you here throughout the week. Continue reading
