CANTO: Nile, Vestige, Laceration, and More

On a Deafheaven kick this week. Apparently.

  • We got some tours. Nile revealed a new track today titled “To Strike with Secret Fang”, a reminder that The Underworld Awaits Us All is out August 23 through Napalm Records. But! They also announced a co-headlining 2025 run with Six Feet Under. Here are those details.
  • Green Lung are bringing Castle Rat along for a run in September, kicking off on the 13th in Baltimore. Tickets go on sale Friday as usual.
  • And then on the other side of the country, Laceration have dates around the same time, joined by Molten. They’ll be supporting I Erode, which is out on July 26 through 20 Buck Spin.
  • And some black metal. 1349 set October 4 as the release date for The Wolf and The King, which will be out through Season of Mist. Give “Shadow Point” a listen here.
  • And we can close out Tuesday with some atmospheric post-metal in the form of Vestige. With Janis out on September 6 through Season of Mist as well, you can find a video for “Corrosion” below.

Best of 2023: Corey’s List

Best of 2023

Well, here we are again. Another year of listening to metal. And then talking about it. Usually celebrating it. Sometimes arguing about it (way too much of that for some of us…). But when you’re embedded in this art on a different, more personal level, as we all are, that kind of comes with the territory. It’s how this blog came to be, what, a decade ago? Crazy how we’ve made it to this point, honestly. So, with all of that said, I’m once again proud to share my favorite albums from the year that was, which you will eventually find below.

CANTO: Green Lung, Hinayana, Veil of Maya, and More

The forecast calls for snow… you know what that means! …Actually, it means very little. Carry on.

  • Opening up, we have a brand new track from Hinayana which features Tuomas Saukkonen of Wolfheart. Give the lyric video for “A Tide Unturning” a watch here. Shatter And Fall is out this Friday through Napalm Records.
  • Full of Hell and Nothing shared another sample from their upcoming collaborative LP, When No Birds Sang. Check out “Like Stars In The Firmament” here. That album is out on December 1 through Closed Casket Activities.
  • Veil of Maya announced some U.S. headlining dates at the beginning of the new year. They’ll be joined by Angelmaker, Left To Suffer, Until I Wake, Reflections and Alluvial for various parts of that journey. Tickets go on sale Friday here.
  • Speaking of Alluvial, they shared a video for the new track “Fogbelt”. The Death Is But a Door EP is out on January 12 through Nuclear Blast.
  • I’ve been enjoying This Heathen Land quite a bit this week, the latest from Green Lung, so let’s wrap up with their new video for “Hunters in the Sky”. Their third album is also available now through Nuclear Blast.

Best of 2021: Chris’s List

Best of 2021

The beginning is the end. Literally, in this case. I started this post with the entries for my list a few weeks ago, wrote my 1,000 word review (sorry) on my Album of the Year and concluding paragraph right before Christmas, and now here I am in the vaporous ether before the new year pondering the introduction.

And there are no words left.

I’ve wrangled with the why, trying to make sense of the music I consume and what it says, and I hit a point where trying to find an answer was…pointless. Not because it’s unimportant to know, but in the last two years the rest of the world became so much harder to deal with, life became so much harder to deal with, something in my brain went into emergency mode and just shut down the logic circuits, sending one single message over and over again:

“Stop thinking, stupid. It’s just music.”
