The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 330 (4.06.2024)

playlist - mixtape

It’s a quick one for the 330th edition of the Nine Circles Playlist because the hell week ended with an earthquake here in NY and with only a few days until the solar eclipse blinds everybody I’m putting my headphones on, blasting the new Rezn single and the latest Witch Vomit album under the covers until it’s over.

The rest of the 9C staff have a bevy of great picks as well, but I’m too tired to post them here so you’ll have to be surprised by listening to the playlist below. Trust me: plenty of good stuff lies within…

Get listening. Stay safe. See you next week.

The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 323 (2.17.2024)

playlist - mixtape

It’s freezing in New York. We just got our first significant snowfall of Winter here, and as it will my listening tastes turn once again to black metal. I’ve been diving into the massive expanded edition of Dayal Patterson’s Black Metal: Evolution of the Cult and DAMN that is a well-researched book. So while yeah, I’m kicking off the 323rd edition of the Nine Circles Playlist with some fun stuff from the recently released Transit Method record, there’s plenty of frost-bitten corpsepaint lurking within from the likes of a double shot from the new Hulder, the most excellent new Farsot, and my favorite track from the Falls of Rauros off-shoot Rhûn.

Elsewhere in the frigid corners of the 9C offices we have new music from SlimeLord, The Last of Lucy, Coffins, and the welcome return of Black Tusk (I still rock hard and loud to Set the Dial). There’s the piercing screams of Attic, classic Death (it’s ALL classic IMO)…hell, we even got a reminder that Skid Row freakin’ ripped back in the day.

There’s so much more this week, I can’t even begin to tell you…okay, there’s also an entire EP from Altar Nocturno to close us out…I told you this week was heavy with black metal.

Get listening. Stay safe. See you next week.

Best of 2023: Angela’s List

Best of 2023

2023 was a whirlwind.  It started with an amazing trip to California where we visited Vincent and also had the immense pleasure of meeting some other 9C family members—Colin and Hera.  We then returned home to a flooded basement and a dog in need of surgery due to an aggressive cancerous tumor in her jaw.  The middle of the year was spent attending to the chaos while I also started a new job.  The highs and lows have been extreme but thankfully we were able to end the year on a high note and carry those good vibes into the new year.  Our beloved dog is still going strong with part of her jaw missing but doing well and feisty as ever.  In November I got to say “yes” to my person as he got down on one knee in the woods and proposed.  We are carrying these delightful feelings of love and joy into 2024 and hopefully embarking on a way less dramatic year.

On a less personal note, the music that 2023 delivered is outstanding.  I enjoyed many metal and non-metal releases that carried me through to the end of December.  Instead of doing multiple lists, I am jam packing this one with my favorites.  What I love about the end of year season is the variety of lists we put out there and how diverse our tastes are with some overlapping favorites.  Those who are familiar with my reviews and/or The Nine Circles Audio Thing know that my musical interests tend to favor the doomy, female-fronted, dreamy, shoegaze-y, dark, spooky, sad and slow variety.  That being said, these lists consist of my personal favorites and albums that spoke to me.  Each year I struggle with the placement of my albums as some of my favorites tend to teeter on the line of metal.  I decided not to agonize over that this year and just go with my heart.  We’ll call this my list of metal and metalish (metal enough?) albums.

Let’s crack into it!

The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 310 (11.18.2023)

playlist - mixtape

It seemed like a no-brainer: Judas Priest just released the second singe from their forthcoming album Invincible Shield. What better way to kick off the 310th edition of the Nine Circles Playlist? But then out of nowhere…holy SHIT that new Ihsahn track! Dude has got some unfinished Emperor business buried in those riffs, so you get two killer cuts to end your week the right way.

The playlist is a little light this week as folks wend their way through Decibel’s annual “leak” of their Best of 2023 list, but we’ve got new tracks from a re-ignited Sadus, noise merchants Ex Everything, and cuts from the likes of Distances, Eternal Storm, Gridlink, the return of Darkest Hour, and more. You want some Mephitic Grave? We got it! Scuzzy death from Enforced? You’re covered! You say you want TWO tracks from Panopticon? Uh, I usually don’t allow it but we’re light this week so…okay! I never heard of Vansind before Angela’s review this week, but here’s some swordplay and metal for you! All that and I’m throwing in some Zulu because seriously…A New Tomorrow is one of the best heavy albums to come out this year.

The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 295 (8.5.2023)

playlist - mixtape

It’s the 295th edition of the Nine Circles Playlist. I know that because I’m writing it – not as you’re reading it but as I’m literally writing these words across my monitor. One thing I learned very quickly during last night’s adventures was that repeating the reality of a situation can help tether you to the firmament of the truth if, say, someone got a little too high after consuming too much of a particular gummy candy promoting a “versatile” experience. Just saying…

Anyway, what’s on tap this week? New tracks from East of the Wall, Fires in the Distance, and some live Devin Townsend to start, followed by a slew of things to tickle your fancy and get you moving in a direction of your choosing: we’ve got Nervosa, Dust Bolt, Death Goals, new Ragana, Fabricant, remastered High on Fire, Thy Catafalque, Moonlight Sorcery covering Deep Purple, some classic Rainbow, and even Jason Isbell to boot.

Get listening. Stay safe. See you next week.
